Goodwin's Mills Fire-Rescue covers the towns of Dayton and Lyman, Maine: 59 square miles of mostly single family residences with a year-round population of around 5,600.
We are classified as a 501C4 non-profit corporation known as the Goodwin's Mills Fire Department, Inc. As a corporation, we meet monthly and operate under a set of by-laws governed by the members.
We contract with the the towns of Dayton and Lyman to provide Fire-Rescue and EMS services. The contracts with the towns are signed annually.
Our operating cost is split 50/50 between the two towns and is augmented by ambulance billing. This arrangement of "regionalization" is over 50 years old and is still in working order today.
We operate out of one station located in the village of Goodwin's Mills, responding with 3 Engines, 1 Ladder, 2 Ambulances and 1 Forestry Truck to approximately 500 emergency calls a year.
We have written Mutual Aid agreements with eight surrounding communities, and Automatic Mutual Aid is used on reported Structure Fires as well as all incidents to areas of town over 5 miles from the Fire Station.
The City of Saco is contracted to provide Dispatching services, a practice that was started in 1971.
Goodwin's Mills Fire-Rescue uses multiple levels of creative staffing to provided the townspeople with protection 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
We have 2 full-time Firefighter-EMTs who are on-duty at the Fire Station Monday through Friday, 7am to 5pm. Outside these hours there are two to three members on call to respond to emergencies.
The Fire Chief and Officers are annual stipend positions.
The Fire Chief is elected by the members for a five year term. The towns appoint the elected Fire Chief as the town's Fire Chief. This appointment charges him/her with the authority to appoint officers, hire/fire employees and maintain, operate and deploy the Department as he/she sees fit.
